Why Meditation?

Why Meditation?

We all know that Meditation is helpful, but how, exactly, does it work? And what, exactly, are the benefits?

The scientifically confirmed neurological benefits include the following: reduction of normal age-related grey matter volume in the brain; reduced activity in the "me" centers of the brain (the default mode network or the "monkey mind"); enhanced connectivity between different brain regions; decreased brain cell volume in the amygdala (which is responsible for the 'fight, flight, freeze' response); measurable changes in major organs.

The actual perceived benefits that we notice? Increased focus and ability to sustain attention, lowered depression and anxiety, greater concentration, decreased cravings for addicts in recovery, improved overall psychological well-being and peace of mind.

It's important to find a good meditation teacher. Many people have misperceptions about meditation- such as thinking that they are supposed to get 'rid of' their thoughts or that the only type of meditation is sitting in silence.

Even monks who have meditated most of their lives have intrusive thoughts during their practice; our minds are made to keep busy. The practice is about not attaching to those thoughts and simply returning to your breath. And if one style of meditation doesn't suit you, there are many others to try.

Meditation is a simple yet profound tool that anyone can practice to add a sprinkle of joy, peace, and calm into their lives. Who doesn't want more of that?
